In the early 1930s, The New York Daily News became the biggest newspaper in America by focusing on scandalous and titillating stories. Its tabloid format allowed it to reach a much wider audience than the other newspapers at the time. The paper also made use of large photographs and featured a wide variety of topics, including local city news, celebrity gossip, classified ads, sports, comics, and more.
The Daily News began a period of decline in the 1970s. Its circulation was decreasing and its rivals were gaining ground. In 1978, a major union strike by employees resulted in the loss of 145,000 daily subscribers. The strike also resulted in a massive price increase and production problems, further contributing to the paper’s loss of revenue.
By the end of the 1980s, the Daily News was nearly bankrupt. Its ten unions, led by the Allied Printing Trades Council, demanded higher wages and shorter workweeks. The Tribune Company hired non-union workers to replace the striking workers, resulting in a $70 million loss in the fourth quarter of 1990 alone. The Daily News was able to revert to profitability in 1993, after several big changes were made by publisher Marty Zuckerman.
In 1996, the Daily News started a popular quarterly insert called BET Weekend for African Americans. This was followed in 1998 by a monthly insert for Hispanics, called Latino Weekly. The Daily News also began publishing an online version in 1997, which was soon followed by the website.
The Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper. It publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year and serves the Yale community. The News has a wide array of special issues throughout the year, such as the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue and the Commencement Issue. It also includes cultural and issue-focused editions in collaboration with Yale’s various student groups.
