New York Daily News
Founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News, the New York Daily News was the first successful American tabloid newspaper. The paper attracted readers with sensational news of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons.
In its heyday in the mid-20th century, the Daily News competed with its even more sensational rival, the New York Post, for the hearts and wallets of New York City residents. The News was known for its large and bold photographs, intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, sports, and an opinion section.
The paper also owned and operated a variety of other media properties including television and radio stations. The Daily News was headquartered in the art deco-style Daily News Building on East 42nd Street in Manhattan, designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The News moved to its current location at 450 West 33rd Street (also known as Manhattan West) in 1995.
Startup investor and long-time news junkie Dave Pell curates a daily collection, in both e-newsletter and iPhone app form, of the day’s most interesting reads. If you’re a news nerd who loves to click through original sources, you’ll appreciate that Pell’s selections include links to dozens of the top news sites. From heart disease research to World Penguin Day, Pell has you covered.
