The legal profession is constantly changing. Keeping up with the latest trends can help attorneys create a successful practice. One trend that is gaining momentum is law new, which focuses on providing legal services in different ways. This can involve working with underserved communities or creating strategies that haven’t been used before. It can also include new ways to reach clients or using technology to provide more efficient services.
For example, in 2024, New York Law School launched the Center for New York City and State Law to reflect its commitment to making NYC and NYS government more transparent, understandable, and effective. The Center pursues its mission through news and explainer articles; research; in-depth public events with expert guests; and more.
Another way law new is being used is by promoting social change. For example, it can include empowering underserved communities or working with immigrants and refugees. In addition, it can involve collaborating with other organizations to improve the legal system and community as a whole. This can be done by helping people navigate the court system, working with the police department to reduce crime, or providing educational programs for young children and adults.
In other words, the goal is to use law to address societal problems and advance justice. To this end, New York Law students engage in a wide range of civic activities as part of their education, including internships at non-profits and government agencies and externships with private firms. The School’s dedicated faculty share their passion for public service and bolster students’ skills in the areas of community and international development.
A recent example of this is the work of NYLS students in the Patent Law Clinic, who helped a disabled veteran secure a U.S. patent for his clean energy invention. Another example is NYLS alumnus Steve Cohen ’13, who was named an Up & Coming Lawyer in Family Law by preLaw magazine.
The law is a fundamental tool for shaping society and responding to new challenges. The creation of new laws, or legislation, is a crucial process that reflects democratic principles and accountability by enabling voters to influence policy through their elected representatives. The legislative process involves various steps, such as drafting, committee review, floor debate, and voting. Amendments can also be added to bills during the process. The president’s veto power can also affect the passage of a bill.
